Caffé Vergnano has a long tradition since 1882 when Domenico Vergnano opened a grocery store in the town of Chieri near Turin, Italy. Soon, he started selling and roasting coffee. This dedication was fueled by bold decisions, including purchasing the first coffee plantation in Kenya. From the beginning, Vergnano focused on selecting the most valuable coffee varieties that grow at certain altitudes and special mineral-rich climates in Central American countries like Haiti, El Salvador, Costa Rica, San Domingo, Guatemala, and later Kenya and Brazil. Quality control actually starts before the plant grows, by using natural compost on coffee farms producing for Vergnano, as this is the only method allowing cultivation of flavorful coffee beans.
Coffee has been enjoyed for hundreds of years, but its preparation and flavors continue to evolve. Italy was the gateway for coffee into Europe and has refined its preparation over centuries. About a hundred years ago, Italians invented the first espresso machine, now considered the most perfected and popular coffee drink.
Knowing how to brew coffee properly is essential; the drink is an emulsion similar to broth. Coffee brews, it does not steep like tea. Water and coffee oil must combine to release all aromatic substances. If water remains separated from oil, the brew will not taste good, just like burnt food.
Today, coffee is a sought-after beverage worldwide, a natural source of antioxidants with effects similar to green tea. Due to its caffeine content, it stimulates the mind, fights fatigue, and in reasonable amounts may strengthen the body's natural cell defenses. Caffeine stimulates the central nervous system and improves human performance.
In the 16th and 17th centuries, coffee drinking in Europe was a social affair. While the first European coffeehouses appeared, in the Arab world coffeehouses were already well-established centers of political debate and entertainment.
Coffee came to the Czech lands in the 17th century, initially consumed only by the upper classes. For a long time, it was regarded as a rare digestive remedy, sold only in pharmacies and was quite expensive. Later, it became a popular stimulating beverage crossing social classes.
